‘Interesting one’… Tottenham could make move for midfielder Manchester United sold for £15m

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer move to sign James Garner, less than two years after Manchester United sold him.

The summer transfer window is still a few months away, but clubs are already planning ahead. Tottenham will almost definitely strengthen their midfield, and Everton‘s Garner could become an option for them.

Tottenham view James Garner as an alternative to Conor Gallagher

Everton signed James Garner from Manchester United in a £15 million deal back in the summer of 2022 ().

The 22-year-old midfielder has become a regular under Sean Dyche, starting all but two games for the Toffees since the beginning of this season.

Garner’s performances for Everton have been really good, so much so that Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to sign him.

Spurs have been behind Conor Gallagher for months now, and Dean Jones has suggested now that if they can’t get the Chelsea man, they could go after Garner in the summer.

The journalist told : “Garner is probably a Gallagher alternative that Tottenham might look at. Obviously, it’s very early days to be analysing the summer transfer window.

“We know that Tottenham are still waiting to see if Conor Gallagher does become available because there is a feeling still that he might and the longer that contract situation goes on, the longer they will believe that something might be able to happen.

“But, if Conor Gallagher does end up signing a contract extension, they need to have a list of names they immediately turn to. And I guess James Garner kind of fits the profile somewhat so yeah, an interesting one to look out for.”

James Garner vs Conor Gallagher stats

Tottenham targets James Garner and Conor Gallagher are both fantastic players.

The latter is already at a huge club in Chelsea, while Garner, a product of Manchester United‘s academy, has the potential to become a star at a big side in the coming years.

Defensively, the Everton man averages 2.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per game, which are all superior to Gallagher’s corresponding stats ().

However, when it comes to offensive statistics, the Chelsea man comes out on top, averaging 1.3 shots and key passes per game along with a very impressive passing accuracy of 90.9 per cent in the Premier League this season ().

Going off the above numbers, it’s safe to say that Tottenham are better off signing Gallagher if they want a new number eight. However, if their aim is to bring in a defensive midfielder, Garner might just be the better fit.
