Bruno Fernandes suggests he wanted to join Tottenham

Bruno Fernandes has told Portuguese publication that he hoped to join Tottenham last summer.

The North London-based outfit were among a clutch of Premier League clubs keen on signing the attacking midfielder.

He enjoyed a superb season during 2018/19, scoring 32 goals and registering 18 assists.

The Sporting Lisbon star is bang in form this season too, with 13 goals and 13 assists to his name already.

He pledged his future to the Portuguese outfit by signing a new deal in November, although interest is likely to remain.

Opening up to press in his native country, Fernandes has suggested that a move to Tottenham was his preferred move.

“In the summer I thought I could go. I believed it was a good time to leave due to many factors.

“After the UEFA Nations League, there were already many contacts, especially with Tottenham. It was the team that wanted me the most and was the only one I agreed to talk with. The other offers didn’t interest me or the project wasn’t up to my expectations.

“Tottenham fit into everything I wish I had at that moment. Knowing that Tottenham would be willing to pay for me and take me made me eager to take that step.

Fernandes is valued at £63 million and he wouldn’t come cheap to any potential suitor.

Whether Tottenham are still keen remains to be seen.

Changes

Jose Mourinho has now replaced Mauricio Pochettino and his transfer strategy could be slightly different.

Given the form that Fernandes is in, the serial title winner would surely welcome the 25-year-old as part of his squad.

With Christian Eriksen almost certain to leave the club either in January or in the summer, a replacement will almost certainly be needed.

On current form, Mourinho would be extremely wise to ask the hierarchy at Tottenham to revive the summer move for Fernandes.
