Tottenham appear to have made a January mistake with Jack Clarke – TBR View
Tottenham signed Jack Clarke from Leeds United for £10million () back in 2019, which seemed a strange deal at the time given his lack of first-team experience.
Spurs realistically took a punt on the talented youngster a couple of years ago and are yet to really see any reward from it.
He struggled in the 2019/20 season during his time on two separate loan deals, while the first half of this campaign he was kept around the first-team squad for training.
The English attacker has made three senior appearances this season for Spurs, but the North London club decided in January to try sending him out on another loan to help his development and give him the platform to really kick on.
Clarke, 20, dropped down to the Championship again last month by joining Stoke City on loan, who are 10th in their league table.
He’s a right-winger with pace, trickery and directness, but he’s done very little on the senior stage in the past couple of years since making a real breakthrough at Leeds.
His time at Stoke during the next few months should hopefully be defining for him and try push him closer to some Premier League minutes next year, but at this rate Spurs should be kicking themselves that they allowed him to join them.
Clarke has started just four of his nine matches so far at Stoke, failing to complete 90 minutes in any game.
The skilful wide player shouldn’t be guaranteed minutes anywhere, but the fact he can’t break into the Stoke XI right now is a real concern and perhaps Spurs would have been better sending him further down the ladder where starts are more likely.
He’s looked lively in some of the cameo displays he’s had and should be trying to light up the Championship.
