Tottenham and West Ham reportedly considered Rangers star that Jermain Defoe has raved about
Tottenham and West Ham are just two of a long list of Premier League clubs to have reportedly taken a look at Rangers captain James Tavernier recently as the English ace continues to shine under Steven Gerrard – and Jermain Defoe is clearly a big fan.
Tavernier, 29, is in the form of his life. From the right side of the defence, Tavernier has scored 16 goals already this season – while also laying on 11 assists. Yes, he is the club’s penalty taker, but he has still netted seven times from open play.
It is a sensational record and it’s not just in Scotland. In Europe, Tavernier has two goals and three assists in five group games. Tottenham considered Tavernier – along with West Ham, Palace, Newcastle and Everton.
Speaking in February 2019, Defoe was full of praise for Rangers teammate Tavernier after a 4-0 win over St. Mirren in which the Gers were awarded four penalties. Tavernier had scored two out of three, before giving one to veteran Defoe.
“For the captain to give you the ball when he is on a hat-trick it says a lot about his character and it says a lot about the spirit of the team,” “Not many people would do that. Credit to him, he is a great guy.
“He showed great character to be honest because a lot of players if they miss a penalty they hide a little a bit but he wanted to step up and take it again,” Defoe continued, who has since netted his 30th goal for the Gers in 60 outings.
TBR’s view – Should Spurs and West Ham look at Tavernier again?
January is fast approaching and there are likely to be rumours regarding Tavernier – but with Rangers qualifying for the last 32 of the Europa League and with their best chance of stopping Celtic in the title race, it is unlikely he will go anywhere.
Next summer is much more likely for Tavernier to move on. But by October 2021, he will be 30 years of age. It remains to be seen how much Rangers would charge for their captain – and if Tavernier would want to move.
But if he is available at a decent price, Tavernier could certainly rival Serge Aurier for a spot at Spurs – and would probably be a better alternative to Vladimir Coufal and Ryan Fredericks at West Ham. Time will tell.
