Tottenham 2-1 Southampton: Three things we learnt
Southampton are building up confidence under Claude Puel
Although he hasn’t managed to have the success in the league that Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman managed to achieve before him, Claude Puel is doing a good job at Southampton and they have made progress in recent weeks. Their performance in the EFL Cup final was superb and showed that they have the ability to compete with the best teams in this division. Despite falling two goals behind in the first half, the Saints fought hard and came close to picking up a positive result at White Hart Lane.
Manolo Gabbiadini was taken off with a thigh injury when the score was 2-0 to Tottenham and it would have been easy for the South Coast side to collapse at that point. However, Southampton are a side with excellent players and they didn’t give up, which is a quality that comes from their manager. They may have lost this afternoon, but White Hart Lane is a difficult place to go and they more than played their part in what was an exciting match for the neutral. The Saints are in the top ten and they should be looking to climb into the top eight before the end of the season based on this performance.
