‘Top class’… BBC pundit left amazed by 26-year-old Erik ten Hag sold for £15m this summer

Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool today, it was one of Erik ten Hag’s former players that caught Shay Given’s eye.

Given was speaking on the BBC’s yesterday and was so impressed with one performance against United’s rivals Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side were immensely frustrated to draw late on against Crystal Palace, and Shay Given thought goalkeeper Dean Henderson was instrumental throughout.

Of course, Erik ten Hag decided to sell United’s Henderson for this summer, a decision Given may even now consider a mistake.

Either way, he was extremely impressed with England’s Henderson who got a chance to make his league debut in the absence of Sam Johnstone.

Speaking to Gary Lineker, Given said: “Tough place to go [the Etihad] for any goalkeeper, Gary, isn’t it? But he had a brilliant afternoon, there’s no getting away from that.

“Everything that was asked of him today, he made some good blocks, good saves and probably the pick of the bunch was this one off of Bernando Silva.

“This is a top class save for any goalkeeper in the Premier League making this, he’s gone full stretch to his right hand side and that’s a brilliant save, keeps his team in the game that’s for sure.”

Of course, this creates an obvious comparison to the current United number one, Andre Onana.

The goalkeeper’s struggles at Old Trafford this season have been well documented, and his performances are still littered with mistakes.

Onana was thought to be preferred to Henderson on the basis of his distribution, but even that has now been called into question this season.

And Given’s praise may now caused some Man United fans to question ten Hag’s decision to let Henderson leave.

At 26-years-old Henderson clearly still has a lot of room for growth, and Palace must consider that they have a huge asset at the club.

Although competition with a fully fit Johnstone will be tough, it’s a very positive situation for Palace.

And United fans must consider that the South London club now boast a stronger goalkeeping department than their own, despite both being former Man United players.
