Tony Pulis makes exciting Patrick Bamford claim after Leeds star scores against Blackburn
that he reckons Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford could be about to go on a scoring streak and net five times in five games – after breaking his drought against Blackburn.
Bamford, 26, got off to a flyer earlier in the season. He netted four in his first five Championship fixtures including a brace against Wigan Athletic – a match which Leeds won 2-0. Even the signing of Eddie Nketiah could not stop Bamford.
But as soon as September hit, Bamford has seemingly struggled. Marcelo Bielsa has kept his faith with the former Chelsea man, who Bielsa believes contributes more to play than Nketiah – though the latter has scored three league goals without a start.
Nketiah is currently sidelined with an abdominal problem and after scoring a disallowed goal against QPR last weekend, Bamford finally ended his drought from the penalty spot. Bamford’s former Middlesbrough boss Pulis discussed the striker.
“He’s a smashing lad, he’s a bit laid back at times but I tell you what, he can play,” “He’s got everything to be a top player. His record shows that he scores in streaks.
“He could go on and score five in the next five games for Leeds. He is a very, very good player. He works hard, I know people have been moaning, but he contributes a lot to that team.”
TBR’s view – Blackburn display proves Bielsa is right about Bamford.
Yes, the striker took his tally to five for the season with a calm, well-taken penalty that saw Christian Walton dive the wrong way during the first 45 at Elland Road. But it was his all-round play that caught the eye.
For Leeds’ second, Bamford showed why Bielsa has kept him in the side above Nketiah. A superb long ball from Kalvin Phillips was made 100 times better by Bamford, who controlled the 60-yard pass with aplomb.
The striker then had the vision, awareness, and deftness of touch to play the ball into the onrushing Jack Harrison who calmly found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Bamford is back in the goals, but has also proved Bielsa right.
