Tony Pulis hails ‘outstanding’ Liverpool duo who didn’t score at Brighton

Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners away at Brighton in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.

The Reds picked up a fairly routine win on the south coast thanks to a goal in each half.

Luis Diaz, who has hit the ground running at Liverpool, opened the scoring in the 19th minute.

The Colombian raced onto a defence-splitting delivery from Joel Matip and headed into the net.

Diaz also got pole-axed by Robert Sanchez in the process, but thankfully the Liverpool striker was able to continue.

Controversially, the Brighton keeper’s challenge was deemed not worthy of a red card following a VAR review.

On the hour mark, an Yves Bissouma handball prompted referee Mike Dean to award the Anfield outfit a penalty.

Mohamed Salah duly converted from the spot, slamming his effort down the middle.

While Liverpool’s attackers were once again in the spotlight for their heroics, the back line also deserved credit.

Alisson Becker, the back four and Fabinho were all in top form, keeping a clean sheet for the Reds.

Tony Pulis, commentating on BBC Sport, singled centre-backs Matip and Virgil van Dijk out for praise.

“Liverpool are firmly on top,” Pulis said on BBC Radio 5 Live ().

“They’ve got so many good players and the two centre-halves are just outstanding.”

Liverpool really have no weaknesses in their team, with quality all across the pitch.

We saw last season what happens when numerous key back line players get injured – things fall apart.

But now, Liverpool’s defence is once again boasting its big guns.

Indeed, the Reds already have one major trophy on board this season and are still in contention for the other three.
