Tony Dorigo says Leeds player was ‘absolutely outstanding’ vs Burnley

Tony Dorigo that he thought that Junior Firpo was absolutely outstanding for Leeds United in their win over Burnley, claiming that the left-back produced his best display yet for the club.

Leeds picked up their most important victory of the campaign at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into the contest just five points above the bottom three. And they faced a Burnley side who boasted two games in hand.

So defeat would have left Leeds in big trouble.

They started well and took a 1-0 lead into half-time. And they kicked on superbly after conceding an equaliser early on in the second-half. Stuart Dallas and Daniel James both scored late on to ensure that Leeds moved eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Several Leeds players were colossal in the win. Dallas popped up with yet another important goal for the club. And Joe Gelhardt produced an outrageous assist for the home side’s third.

But perhaps no player provided a greater surprise than Junior Firpo. It is fair to say that the 25-year-old has not had the easiest time since arriving at Leeds in the summer.

He has shown glimpses of his quality. However, he has also made a number of mistakes. But there is no doubt that he was superb against the Clarets. His statistics from the game were excellent.

And Dorigo has suggested that he has never been better for Leeds.

“I’d also like to mention a few other players who I thought were absolutely outstanding, and Junior Firpo is the first one,” .

“I thought we saw a more complete performance against Burnley, his best performance for Leeds in my opinion.

“He was aggressive, he got on the front foot more, he got in there first and that’s what we want to see.”

Burnley performance could be turning point for Junior Firpo at Leeds

Sunday saw only the second time since the end of October that Junior has completed 90 minutes for Leeds. And fans will hope that it proves to be the start of a more consistent run.

It was certainly his most complete performance. He showed his potential at both ends of the pitch, having two opportunities to score.

The belief the win should provide means that the Burnley game could prove to be a real turning point for Leeds. But it could also be looked back upon as a key moment in Junior’s Leeds career.
