Tony Dorigo admits concern about struggling Leeds star Diego Llorente
Tony Dorigo that Diego Llorente is struggling right now, but backed the Leeds United defender to turn his fortunes around.
No player in Jesse Marsch’s side surely has a bigger question mark hanging over them right now than the Spaniard. Llorente is currently going through a really poor patch of form.
He was poor in the loss to Brighton. And he made a big mistake for the goal Leeds conceded against Everton last week. Unfortunately, the worst display of the lot came against Brentford.
Llorente’s performance against the Bees 2/10. And there may have been some fans who felt that that was generous.
Dorigo expressed some concern about the 29-year-old’s performances. But he insisted that he has the ability to turn his form around.
“Unfortunately Diego Llorente isn’t having his best patch of form and with him, when he’s on the ball and those slicing angled passes go into midfield, it really builds his confidence. I don’t think those passes have been there so much of late and he’s struggled. I felt that at Brighton and it does seem to affect his game, so mistakes creep in,” he told the .
“It’s unlike him but all players go through it and I’m sure he’ll come out the other side.
“He wasn’t alone in making mistakes and showing that the situation had got to him.”
Diego Llorente struggling
The question is whether Llorente should get the chance to put things right. Liam Cooper was on the bench for Saturday’s clash at Brentford.
Jesse Marsch’s preferred pairing last season appeared to be Llorente and Cooper. But Robin Koch has been excellent for much of this campaign. Meanwhile, Pascal Struijk deserves huge credit for the job he has done at left-back.
So it would be a real gamble for Marsch to stick with Llorente against Nottingham Forest on Monday. And if he does, and it backfires, the Leeds boss is likely to receive a lot of criticism.
As Dorigo suggests, Llorente has the quality to turn his fortunes around. But he would surely benefit from being taken out of the firing line after making a number of costly errors.
