Tony Cascarino reckons Arsenal and Manchester United need to consider Englishman
that Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder would be an excellent appointment for either Arsenal or Manchester United, as Unai Emery and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continue to come under intense pressure.
Emery has been linked with the sack for a while now, as criticism for Arsenal’s form are combined with appointing Granit Xhaka as captain and the decision to ostracise Mesut Ozil. His side threw away another lead on Saturday.
They drew to Wolvs 1-1 at home, while Manchester United went one worse and lost to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Though Solskjaer is orchestarting a transition period at Old Trafford, he too is under intense pressure.
There has been plenty of talk as to how long the duo will last in charge of their respective clubs. Cascarino reckons Sheffield United manager Wilder – who masterminded a 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday – would be ideal for either side.
“Man United job, Arsenal job – Chris Wilder? Absolutely,” . “There would be a snobbery around football that would go for [Max] Allegri or [Jose] Mourinho. But I’m like, ‘No, I’d rather go with Chris Wilder.’
“He knows football, he’s a proper football person. Like Sir Alex Ferguson, Jurgen Klopp at Mainz, Pep Guardiola at Barcelona B – he’s shown what he can do. I believe there are managers in lower league football who are very gifted and deserve an opportunity. Chris has gone through the whole lot.”

Wilder is not getting the praise he deserves. There is little scope in football these days to invent a completely new style of football, but Wilder is doing it on a shoe string at Bramall Lane – and has been doing so for years.
A three-man defence that sees centre-backs get forward – as well as wing-backs that end up just as attacking as the strikers is a system masterminded by Wilder. No player has a set position.
The Sheffield-born 52-year-old’s reputation is growing as The Blades continue to take to life in the top flight.
