Tony Cascarino names the ‘sensational’ Liverpool player Arne Slot may not drop from his starting lineup

Liverpool are doing extremely well under manager Arne Slot at the moment.

The Reds are at the top of the Premier League table, five points ahead of defending champions and second-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool are also at the top of the UEFA Champions League – League Stage table.

A number of players are doing well, including midfielder Curtis Jones, who starred for England against Greece in the UEFA Nations League this week.

Another player who has turned on the style for Liverpool is Caoimhin Kelleher.

With Alisson injured for Liverpool at the moment, Kelleher has stepped in his place and has stepped up.

Kelleher has been superb for Liverpool. The 25-year-old goalkeeper is also the number one between the posts for the Republic of Ireland.

TalkSPORT pundit makes Caoimhin Kelleher vs Alisson claim at Liverpool

Former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland international striker Tony Cascarino has been hugely impressed by Kelleher.

The talkSPORT pundit thinks that Liverpool should not sell Kelleher, and has said that he could keep his place in the team even after Alisson recovers from his injury.

Cascarino said about Kelleher: “They (Liverpool) need to make Kelleher their number one as well.

“I would hate to see him go because Alisson has had injuries over the last few years, and he is a terrific goalkeeper, he’s a fantastic goalkeeper, but I think Liverpool, and what I have seen from Kelleher this season, how he has grown, his ability on the ball, he has got much bigger confidence that he had 18 months ago, and rightly so, he’s playing more football.

“He has now become Ireland’s most important player, and he’s going to have to be the most important player when they play England tomorrow for Ireland to have any chance at all.

“Kelleher has moved up pretty quickly, and I think it would be a mad mistake and I think in some ways Arne Slot might look at Kelleher and think he is the future, yes, we have made a goalkeeping change, Alisson was our number one.

“I am not so sure he will drop Kelleher when Alisson’s fit, I am not convinced by that at all. He has been sensational for Liverpool.”

What Caoimhin Kelleher has said about his future

Kelleher has spent his entire career at Liverpool so far and has done well when he has been called into action.

The Republic of Ireland international has played 20 times in the Premier League. He has kept six clean sheets in those games.

In October, Kelleher said that he wanted to leave Liverpool in the summer of 2024, but he made it clear that for now, he is only thinking about playing regularly for the Reds.

Kelleher told : “I was quite clear [last summer] that I wanted to play first-team football, whether that was here or elsewhere. I wanted to be a No 1,” says Kelleher. “That was my thought process – but it’s always been my thought process because obviously I am a football player and, like every player, I want to play. “I’m not going to enjoy myself or be happy sitting on the bench.”

The goalkeeper added: “I am not looking at it as anything other than I have an opportunity to play a few games, so I want to do as well as I can.

“There is no point making this a bigger picture than it is. It is just me getting the opportunity to play some games.”
