Toby Alderweireld hails relationship with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho
Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has commented on the club’s manager Jose Mourinho, explaining that he’s got a great relationship with him.
£11.5million () defender Alderweireld is currently under contract at Spurs until 2023 and he’s been a brilliant servant since he joined from Ajax over five years ago.
The 31-year-old centre-back was an integral part of a side put together by former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but he’s stayed firmly in the plans since Mourinho replaced him a year ago.
Alderweireld has started the last four consecutive Premier League games in the heart of defence and it looks like he’s going to be a nailed-on starter moving forward this season.
He has claimed that the Spurs players who are prepared to “go through fire” for Portuguese manager Mourinho are a success under him.
“Things are going well between Mourinho and me. Everyone has a certain idea of him, that he can be very tough. But if you work for him and go through fire, then he is really on your side. But if you’re going to be annoying because you’re not playing, he’ll push you aside,”

TBR’s View:
Alderweireld is certainly still the senior figure for Spurs at centre-back, which leaves Eric Dier, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez vying for the position next to him.
The Belgium international looked like he may have been on his way out of the club at one stage, but he signed a new deal back in December and Mourinho is desperate to have a few senior figures in his dressing room.
Dele Alli is the glaring example right now that his relationship with players can breakdown, but he’s also helped players thrive and Alderweireld is one of the most experienced individuals he needs on side.
