Toby Alderweireld comments on Tottenham fans after signing new deal

that he loves the Spurs fans and believe it is crucial that Jose Mourinho’s side finish in the top four of the Premier League – after signing a new deal.

Alderweireld, 30, has been linked with a Tottenham exit for quite some time, with Manchester United being heavily linked. He was one of three players who was out of contract at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Now, Mourinho has reduced that to just two – Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen. Since the arrival of Mourinho as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement, Belgian defender Alderweireld’s displays have dramatically improved.

The passion in his performances have also come back, coinciding with Tottenham’s return to form – winning four of their last five league games. Alderweireld stated his love for the Spurs fans and is keen to qualify for the Champions League.

“I’m very, very happy,” . “Another couple of years at Spurs, there is no place I’d rather be. I’m honoured to play for this club, I think this is just the beginning of something – something big and something very exciting.

“I’m very lucky to have a good connection with the fans and the club. Right now, I’m a Spurs player and I couldn’t see myself playing for another team. I love the club and the fans like me, it’s like I’m living some sort of dream.
“We’ve gone from young players to adults and now it’s time to be even better. We need to get into the top four, it is important for the club.”

TBR’s view – Could Alderweireld deal tempt Eriksen and Vertonghen?

It is a somewhat surprising move for Alderweireld to finally perform a u-turn and sign a new Tottenham deal – and remain at the club beyond the summer. Could he now signal a change of intent from Eriksen and Vertonghen?
It may be that Spurs are against offering Vertonghen a new deal, given that he will turn 33 before the end of the season. Eriksen, meanwhile, is showing no passion for the club anymore and it may tempt Spurs against a new deal.
But both players may be more inclined to sign new deals, now Alderweireld has.
