Toby Alderweireld backs Tottenham teammate Steven Bergwijn amid criticism

Toby Alderweireld has praised the quality of Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn and offered some perspective, after the Dutchman was criticised for his wastefulness against Liverpool.

The 23-year-old was questioned following his showing against the Reds in midweek, in which he squandered a couple of great opportunities to score.

Bergwijn was targeted by trolls in the aftermath of the game, and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho came to his defence.

Alderweireld has also backed Bergwijn, and praised his mental strength.

He said (): “Steven is a very good player. He’s strong, quick, left [foot], right [foot]. And yeah, of course, it’s in the details.

“If the ball goes inside of the post, in the goal, inside. It’s details. It’s like so close from it. I have all faith in him.

“He’s very mentally strong, so he will perform the same way he is doing because, he’s a very, very good player.”

Bergwijn will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong by starting and playing well against today’s opponents Leicester City.

He probably should have done better with the chances he had against Liverpool, and he’ll likely have beaten himself up about it.

He’s a top player on his day, who also works really hard out of possession.

Bergwijn is still young and is only just approaching the end of his first full year in English football after his £27 million transfer () – which people will do well to remember.
