TNT pundit so impressed by £12m Arsenal player’s ‘brilliant’ performance against PSV
Lucy Ward lauded Jorginho during the first-half of PSV Eindhoven’s Champions League tie with Arsenal on Tuesday, suggesting that the midfielder had been brilliant for the Gunners.
Ward was speaking on (broadcast on 12/12; 18:15) as the Italian international captained Mikel Arteta’s side in their final group-stage game.
Jorginho was one of those to come into the team as Arteta made a number of changes. Arsenal had already wrapped up top spot in their group. Nevertheless, Arteta still opted for a fairly strong lineup in Eindhoven.
Jorginho shines for Arsenal in Champions League tie
And the midfielder really showed his class in the first-half as Arsenal went into the break 1-0 ahead, with Eddie Nketiah doing brilliantly to find the bottom corner and break the deadlock.

Nketiah’s goal was obviously the moment of genuine quality from an Arsenal player before the interval. But Ward was really impressed by the skipper’s display in a first-half where the Gunners did come under pressure from the PSV attack.
“Jorginho’s been brilliant so far. Opening 30 minutes, exactly what you’d expect from him in terms of dictating. Positioning, very good,” she told .
“He just has that technical ability. He understands what Arteta wants from this system and it’s about being brave enough to play those balls forward.”
Much better signing than many expected
Jorginho is coming up to a year at Arsenal. It is easy to forget now, but there seemed to be real concern when the Gunners were linked with a move for the 31-year-old – and seemingly with good reason.
His time at Chelsea did not go well towards the end. And Arsenal were fighting for the title in the Premier League. So it seemed like an underwhelming decision to spend on Jorginho.
However, Jorginho has proved to be a very decent signing for the Gunners. He rarely lets the team down. And, as Ward notes, he is clearly capable of carrying out exactly what Mikel Arteta wants from him.
