Tim Sherwood says he really doesn’t trust Tottenham’s 25-year-old player

Tottenham put in a very strange performance against Arsenal at the weekend.

Indeed, Spurs seemed to be very unbalanced against the Gunners on Sunday as they lost 3-2 in the north London derby.

Arsenal, of course, raced into a 3-0 lead, and from that point onwards it was anybody’s guess what sort of system Spurs were trying to play.

In one of the strangest tactical moves we’ve seen, Cristian Romero started to play as a centre-back turned striker in the second half, and, remarkably, it worked as Romero grabbed a goal and created a number of chances.

However, speaking on , Tim Sherwood noted how he was concerned by how Romero was playing here, claiming that he was, once again, lacking discipline and a plan in this game.

Tim Sherwood worried by Cristian Romero

Sherwood spoke about the 25-year-old’s performance.

“It’s a worry for me,” Sherwood said.

“What the way he is playing?

“Yeah it’s off the cuff, it’s desperate stuff it’s desperate measures. There’s no plan to it, they were 3-0 down and he’s just going to do what he wants to do. He took it upon himself there and that’s the freedom Ange gives his players. Sometimes he boils over and he lets you down, he’s not someone I would trust fully, but I think he’s one of the better players they have,” Sherwood said.

Cristian Romero is lacking discipline

Sherwood is right to be worried about Romero in a lot of ways.

Yes, his positional shift in this game did work a treat, but you can’t have a player like this at centre-back acting like such a maverick.

You need discipline to play at centre-half, and if Romero keeps playing in such an unorthodox way, ultimately, it will end up costing Tottenham dearly.

Ange Postecoglou may need to tell Romero to rein it in a little bit.
