Tim Sherwood hammers one Tottenham player despite win, claims he has ‘no desire’

In Ryan Mason’s first match as interim manager since the sacking of Jose Mourinho, Spurs fell behind early on as Ings headed home a corner from James Ward-Prowse. However, they massively improved in the second 45.

Gareth Bale took advantage of some space in the box to curl home into the top corner. Son Heung-min was unlucky to see his goal disallowed, but then scored from a penalty after a foul on Sergio Reguilon in the dying moments.

A priceless win for Spurs in their pursuit of the top four, but also crucial that they gathered some momentum ahead of Sunday’s final against Man City. Aurier allowed Ings to score, though, and Sherwood was critical of his “desire”.

Told that Spurs are second worst in the league from set-pieces after Ings’ goal, Sherwood said: “That is due to organisation but also the desire to go and win it, and put your head on the first ball. Aurier has no desire to go and win that ball, Danny wanted to win it.”

TBR’s view – Aurier needs to be sold this summer

The right-back’s form sums up Tottenham. Good on the ball, good going forward at times but lack the defensive stability required to be a top-four side. Like the Spurs defence, he is capable of a lapse in concentration.

Aurier is one of a number of examples of Tottenham defenders that have a mistake in them. When Davinson Sanchez has played, Spurs have to account for at least one mistake from the Colombian that leads to a goal.

Mason rightly took him out of the side and the combination of Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld, while quite slow, seemed to do the trick after a shaky start. Spurs need a right-back, and Aurier needs to go.
