Alderweireld has started every Premier League game this season. But Eriksen and Vertonghen have both been closer to the periphery of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Eriksen has featured in every top flight game, but he has started just three times. Vertonghen meanwhile, was not involved in any of Spurs’s three league fixtures.

And Sherwood suggested following their Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Colchester United on Tuesday that it looks as though the three players are on their way out of the club.

“He certainly knows that three of them are not [staying] by the looks of things. On the face of it, Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld will be leaving for nothing which will hurt the club,” .

“If they want a big move to a bigger club than Tottenham or a club where they think they can win titles, then they’re going to have to perform well. The onus is on them to perform as well.

“The team know and Mauricio knows that they’re not there next year.”

TBR’s View

It is proving to be a difficult time for Spurs. They have now only won one of their last seven games in all competitions and have seen their hopes of winning the Carabao Cup dashed by a League Two side.

Tottenham have dealt with uncertainty surrounding their players in the past. There has rarely been a time during Pochettino’s tenure when a key player has not been heavily linked with a move away.

Of course, questions surrounding Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Eriksen could be particularly impactful. They have been key men for Tottenham throughout Pochettino’s time in charge, and they could all leave at the same time.

But Spurs have still thrived while outsiders have expressed doubts about their players before. So perhaps, it should not be a big surprise if many at Tottenham do not feel that questions about the trio’s futures are to blame for the team’s current run of form.
