‘Ticks all the boxes’… Journalist says everyone wants £40m player to join Newcastle now
Kalvin Phillips has been linked to Newcastle for a long time now.
The Manchester City midfielder is in desperate need of a move away from the Etihad this month, and the Magpies are potential suitors.
Newcastle need a new midfield player after Sandro Tonali’s ban, and this is a move that makes plenty of sense.
Speaking on the , Luke Edwards has been discussing the idea of Phillips heading to St James’ Park, and he says that almost everyone involved in this deal wants it to go ahead with Newcastle wanting the player and the player himself wanting to move to Tyneside.

All boxes ticked on Phillips move
Edwards shared what he knows about the midfielder.
“My understanding is that Kalvin Phillips is very keen on the Newcastle move and Newcastle are very keen on Kalvin Phillips as they were in the summer. Newcastle are, like a lot of clubs, are wary of what’s happened to Everton in terms of Profit and Sustainability rules. That’s a real and present danger, so they would like a loan. It ticks all the boxes, the club wants him, the player wants I believe to move to Newcastle, the size of the loan fee is prohibitive, they want between £5-7m just until the end of the season and that’s a lot of money. Manchester City would like that obligation to buy for around £40m that they paid Leeds United for him,” Edwards said.
Great option
This is a fantastic landing spot for Phillips, and, in all honesty, this is the type of move he should’ve made when he left Leeds.
With all due respect, Phillips must’ve known he wasn’t going to get much gametime at Manchester City when he signed, and he’s much more likely to play and rediscover his form at Newcastle.
Phillips should suit Eddie Howe’s style to a tee as well. He was a star in Marcelo Bielsa’s pressing system at Leeds, and Howe incorporates a similar style at Newcastle.
Keep an eye on this deal progressing in the coming days and weeks.
