Three things we learnt from Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham
An emphatic start to this mid-table clash saw Southampton’s new £14 million signing Manolo Gabbiadini fire the opening goal on his home debut for the club. However, Saints’ fans celebrations were short lived when man-in-form Andy Carroll fired in past a hapless Fraser Forster.
There was soon more misery at St Mary’s as Pedro Obiang struck a long range effort just before half-time, his first goal for the club since joining last season. This was followed in the second period by a Mark Noble free-kick, which received a telling deflection off of Steven Davis.
Southampton, despite their efforts, were unable to capitalise on some key chances that could’ve meant they found their way back into the game, meaning West Ham had won their first ever match at St Mary’s. What a way to make history…

Gabbiadini needs no introduction to the Premier League
Forget Shane Long and Charlie Austin, Southampton fans could be looking at their new cult hero in former Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini. The Italian was electric in the opening moments for Southampton and showcased his blistering pace and finishing on the 12th-minute mark when he fired furiously into the roof of Randolph’s net. Gabbiadini’s movement, speed, and position meant that Southampton had several outlets to start an attack via. It’s a shame that he wasn’t able to get a second deserved goal that would have surely lead to a tense finish for both sets of fans. However, if the 25-year-old continues in this vein, he is destined to be one of the side’s top scorers this season.
