Three things we learnt from Southampton’s 1-1 draw against Watford
The season got underway for the Saints and the Hornets at St. Mary’s with ꧑a 1-1 draw perhaps being a fair result given the relative dominance the away side enjoyed in the first 45, and the fact that the opposite was true in the second half. However, Southampton may feel they should have grabbed all three points considering Watford finished the game with 10 men.
Watford have not beaten the Saints since 2008 and that wait will continue, despite the efforts of new Italian manager Walter Mazzarri. The home side had a new face in the dugout too, with Frenchman Claude Puel overseeing his new side fo🥀r the first time competitively.
Watford’s Etienne Capoue opened the scoring inside of 10 minutes, reacting fastest inside the box. Southampton did n❀ot look in the game until new signing Nathan Redmond equalised after 57 minutes, which was the first step in Southampton’s rejuvenatio꧃n.
However, despite Watford going down to 10 men (Ben Watson was sent off o꧑n 76 mintues for cynically taking out Shane Long) the Saints could not find a way past a resolute Watford defence, and the game ꦦfinished one a piece.
Not a horrendous start for either side, but definitely things to improve on f𝓡or both of the new bosses. Here are three things we learned from Southampton versus Watford.
