Three things we learnt from Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa

Newcastle can grind out results

It is often said that true champions are able to win games without playing well.

So far this season Newcastle have occasionally failed to cope with the pressure in home matches. In those games where they haven’t been leading at half-time, they have gone on to lose. The large, expectant crowds at St James’ Park no doubt playing their part.

Yet on Monday night, Villa had frustrated the Magpies, ensuring the match was played at a pace which suited them.

Although Newcastle received some good fortune when the goal did arrive, it was a reward for their improved resolve, particularly so on the edge of half-time and having earlier lost their top-scorer Dwight Gayle through injury.

For tougher games ahead, including key matches in the promotion race in coming weeks, Newcastle can take confidence from this match, knowing that they can break teams down; they can win ugly.
