Three things we learnt from Liverpool’s thrilling victory over Crystal Palace

Liverpool continue to struggle to defend in the air, but Palace weren’t much better

Before the game, much of the talk was about how Crystal Palace’s aerial superiority would be a real threat at set pieces. That proved to be the case, with both of James McArthur’s strikes coming in the air, even if one benefited from a defensive lapse by Dejan Lovren, as the Eagles twice drew Liverpool back level.

What was not expected was that Pardew’s team would themselves concede twice from set pieces. Joel Matip’s strike was textbook Crystal Palace, only not for them to concede. Matip was afforded acres of space and all the time in the world to head home from eight yards out in the middle of the penalty box at a corner, much to the frustration of the former Newcastle boss.

For Liverpool, it was only the third time they have conceded more than once in the same game this season, not having done so since defeat at Burnley in the second game of the season. For Palace, the hunt for the elusive first clean sheet of the season continues with seven goals conceded in their past two games.
