Three things we learnt from Liverpool’s shock 2-0 defeat to Burnley
2) Daniel Sturridge may not be the forward Liverpool need
Since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield, there has been speculation over whether or not he is a fan of Sturridge. Today the England striker showed a whole host of reasons not to be. With four shots, none on target, no chances created and two failed dribbles, Sturridge disappointed on the right of a front three.
It is no secret that Sturridge prefers to play centrally, a role that Firmino occupied for much of today’s game, though the two did swap as the game went on. Jurgen Klopp prefers to have players who can offer that fluidity and the ability to interchange and adapt, Sturridge failed to offer that. Far too often the former Chelsea man dropped deep, meaning that when the ball broke forwards there was no outlet on the right hand side.
Divock Origi replaced Sturridge with 25 minutes left on the clock, and although he failed to do much more than the number 15, Sturridge needs to produce when he has the opportunity. With a wealth of attacking options, he cannot afford to waste opportunities like today if he is to remain a first choice forward for Jurgen Klopp.
