Three things we learnt from Everton’s 2-0 win over West Ham
Second half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley earned Everton a 2-0 win over West Ham at Goodison Park, to get Ronald Koeman’s side moving up the table again. The visitors had some good spells, particularly in the first half, but the Hammers never quite put it together in the last third.
Slaven Bilic continued with his new formation based on a back three with Cheikhou Kouyate deployed as a right sided centre back. Though the Hammers lost the game, they look a far more solid and cohesive unit than earlier in the campaign. Perhaps their intense EFL Cup encounter against Chelsea had an effect, but Bilic’s side faded as the game progressed.
It was a polished and professional from Everton, and we suggested three things we learnt from the game.
Kevin Mirallas Needs To Get His Act Together
This was a very decent team performance from Everton but Mirallas cut an estranged figure on the flank. Koeman has been praised for the flinty discipline he has installed at Goodison following the rather relaxed atmosphere under Roberto Martinez.
Mirallas is the type of enigmatic character with whom Koeman could swiftly run out of patience. The Belgium international has bundles of pace and ability, but his character is questionable. Everton don’t have to rely on him to bring speed and unpredictability to their attack; they have Yannick Bolasie and Gerard Deulofeu to call upon to provide that.
Schooled as a player and coach at Barcelona, Koeman wants his widemen to perform very specific functions and hold fixed positions. Mirallas needs to start producing, or he will have to satisfied with a place on the bench.
