Three things we learnt from Chelsea’s 3-0 thumping of Leicester City
Leicester City’s defence is completely unrecognisable
Sloppy marking at a set piece leading to an early goal conceded… Surely this can’t be the same Leicester side that we saw pile up the 1-0 victories last season? Unfortunately it is. A combination of new rules about holding and a lack of discipline meant that the Foxes looked on edge at almost every set piece, with Diego Costa taking advantage early on.
Without N’Golo Kante, ironically on the other side, the Foxes struggled to break up play and were restricted to defending with two deep banks of four. Most Premier League teams now know exactly what to expect from Ranieri’s outfit and have worked out how to beat it, and as shown by Chelsea, Ranieri seems to lack a suitable plan B.
In the Champions League, the Foxes are still capable of surprising teams who struggle to adapt to their style, which could explain why they have been so successful in Europe whilst struggling in the Premier League, with this defeat leaving them looking distinctly average in the bottom half of the table.
