Three things we learnt from Burnley’s 2-0 win over Watford

Dyche Has Blueprint To Flourish Without Gray

The partnership between Vokes and Andre Gray was a key reason why Burnley won the Championship title, and the loss of Gray to suspension is a real blow to them in the short term. Rather than make a like for like selection in the form of Patrick Bamford, Dyche decided to go with a three-man midfield of Marney, Hendrick and Defour. The Clarets host Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, and having bodies and energy in central areas will be imperative when the Londoners roll into town.

This was also suited to playing against Watford’s back three, and is indeed a formation that enjoyed a great deal of popularity in the 1990’s when team tended to have two front-men. When Burnley’s full-backs got forward; something they could have done more, they had numerical superiority in wide areas and got plenty of crosses into the box. Watford incidentally, have conceded more goals from crosses than any other Premier League side.
