Three things we learnt from Arenal’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Sutton United
Arsenal managed to avoid embarrassment against Sutton United to qualify for the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, but they were given a real test by the non-league side. It was never likely that Sutton would have been able to beat their more illustrious opponents, yet the club made the most of their time in the spotlight. The more comical moment of the game featured reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw eating a pie on the bench during the second half, which was an incredible sight. Here are three things that we learnt from the match.
Arsenal made it through, but it wasn’t convincing
Normally the only aim for a Premier League side away to non-league opposition is to get through whatever it takes. Arsenal achieved that, but as it came just days after their embarrassing Champions League performance against Bayern Munich, their supporters would have wanted more. Although Sutton competed admirably, the Gunners should have blown them out of the water. The London outfit are one of the best sides in the country and they started with a very strong line-up. They have qualified, but it will have done little to relieve the pressure on Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners have to be considered as one of the favourites to win the FA Cup as they are due to play another non-league side in the Sixth Round. They may have struggled at times on Monday night, but it will be completely different against Lincoln City. The tie will be played at the Emirates Stadium and it would take an incredible performance from the Imps to prevent Arsenal from getting to Wembley. Everybody knows that Wenger is on his last legs at Arsenal and he will see winning the FA Cup as the perfect way to say goodbye.
