Three things we learnt as Lincoln City stunned Burnley in the FA Cup
Burnley pay the price for making six changes
As we saw in the previous round, where Newcastle, Brighton, and Liverpool all paid the price for making wholesale changes to their starting eleven, Burnley have become the next victims of squad rotation.
Sean Dyche left out Ben Mee, Robbie Brady, Ashley Barnes, George Boyd, Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton as he put out an inexperienced defensive line, and his decision to make so many changes – potentially underestimating Burnley’s opponents – came back to haunt him late on.
The replacement back-line failed at the most critical time, leaving a man completely free at the back-post from a corner to nod back across goal, where Raggett beat three Burnley players in the air.
Going into the match having only conceded twelve goals at Turf Moor in nine Premier League matches – the sixth-best record in the league – it begs the questions as to why Dyche changed his line-up so much, eventually costing his side a quarter-final berth.
