Three things that we learnt: Arsenal 0-0 Middlesbrough

A glimmer of hope following a tough start

Middlesbrough have had a tough start to life in the Premier League and have found goals, clean sheets and points equally as hard to come by. Aitor Karanka’s side had lost four of their previous five games prior to this fixture and you would assume that the vast majority of supporters would have travelled to North London more in hope than expectation. However, the visitors produced a gutsy performance that was full of heart, character and no lack of skill and ambition that will provide The Boro with a glimmer of hope as they face up to the reality of a season of struggle at the tail end of The Premier League.

Yes, Arsenal could and probably should have secured victory, but whilst Middlesbrough stuck commendably to their defensive duties they could also have just as easily have won the game themselves. Spearheaded by the pace and drive of Adama Traore, Petr Cech was forced into a multitude of saves and was also left rooted to the spot as a freekick cannoned off the woodwork.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Ben Gibson was magnificent at the heart of the visitors defence, as was Victor Valdes in goal. Middlesbrough still look certain to be embroiled in a relegation scrap this campaign, but this performance demonstrated that Karanka’s men have the heart, character and guts that will give the newly promoted side a real shout at securing Premier League survival.
