Three things learnt from Liverpool’s 2-1 comeback victory over Stoke
After suffering a late equaliser against Bournemouth at Anfield in midweek, Liverpool headed to the bet365 Stadium knowing that this would be their fifth attempt of the season to win a game without Sadio Mane. Thanks to a brilliant second half comeback, they finally managed it.
The Reds, dressed in black on Saturday afternoon, were forced to field a much-weakened line-up including the likes of Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold after a growing list of injuries was added to by the illness of Philippe Coutinho, and Stoke took advantage.
Jonathan Walters found space in the box to fire a bullet header past Simon Mignolet just before half-time, but the Potters had several opportunities to do so earlier, with the Belgian goalkeeper in inspired form.
With Coutinho and Roberto Firmino added at half-time, the visitors looked a different side, with Dejan Lovren hitting the crossbar with a header before the number ten found the back of the net to level the scores.
Then, only moments later, his compatriot Firmino raced through before smashing a lob past Lee Grant to give the away side the lead, sparking emphatic celebrations in the away end with a crucial goal in Liverpool’s hunt for a top four finish.
