Three things learnt as Manchester United saw off spirited Blackburn in the FA Cup

Blackburn’s fight should be enough for Championship survival

Blackburn may currently sit 23rd in the Championship table, five points adrift of safety, but they certainly didn’t play like a side fighting for their lives at Ewood Park on Sunday.

Instead, they showed a huge amount of character, grit and determination to almost cause a huge FA Cup shock, and it took two world-class international players to break Rovers’ dogged resistance.

Even Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, , said:

“Their approach was brave, strong. They had real competitors and if we didn’t have the right attitude from everybody we would be in real trouble.

“For long periods of the game you couldn’t feel which one was the strongest team, they were brilliant. If they transfer this quality to the Championship they will have a big chance to survive.”

This is high praise from the Portuguese manager, and it has to be said that it’s true; if Blackburn can show a similar level of fight each week until May, they more than have the potential to survive.
