Three things learnt as Manchester City’s second-half display swept past Southampton
Vincent Kompany shows his class
With only four Premier League appearances this season and an extensive recent injury list, Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany reminded everyone of his class on Saturday evening.
After two seasons dogged by injury after injury, it’s easy to forget just how exceptional a player the Belgian defender was; inspirational in City’s title win five years ago he was deemed one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and rightly so, giving his side leadership from the back.
Since his return at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago Kompany has shown glimpses of just how good a footballer he is, giving Pep Guardiola’s side a much-needed sense of security at the back.
Defence has been an area in which where City have struggled hugely this season with the ageing bodies of Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksander Kolarov and Bacary Sagna, the youthful naivety of John Stones and the unpredictability of Nicolas Otamendi ultimately costing them the chance to sustain a title charge.
Yet with Kompany back in the side, there seems to be a sense of composure back in the Manchester City back-line and it seems inevitable that he’ll be a key-man next season if he can maintain fitness.
