Three things learnt as Manchester City’s second-half display swept past Southampton

Manchester City strengthened their bid for Champions League football next season after sweeping past Southampton with an impressive second-half performance at St Mary’s on Saturday evening.

After a first-half that had no shots on target registered, City captain Vincent Kompany marked only his fifth appearance of the season with a goal when he headed in from David Silva’s corner.

This opened the floodgates for the visitors, as first Leroy Sane scored after a quick counter-attack before Sergio Aguero rounded off the victory with a well-timed volley at the far post.

The result sees Manchester City rise above Liverpool into third in the Premier League – at least until they play West Brom – whilst Southampton remain in ninth.
