Three stand-out performers Newcastle should target from Euro 2016

Johann Berg Gudmundsson

The Icelandic winger lit up the Championship last season, starring for a poor Charlton side, and there will be a lot of interest in him this summer. He scored six goals and earned an impressive eleven assists, and he did so in a side that was relegated. If he does move to overwhelming favourites to win the division in Newcastle, he could find himself producing even better numbers in the final third.

The Magpies are hardly blessed for wingers, especially given the fact that the future of Andros Townsend is still precarious. A move for Gudmundsson makes sense and he would be available for a reasonable fee, given Charlton are now in the third tier. At the age of 25, he is another who will develop over the next couple of years and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe he could do a job in the top flight.

Gudmundsson would also provide an option as a specialist set-piece taker, something which Newcastle will need in the Championship. A significant proportion of sides may set up to frustrate the North East club, and set-pieces could be a great weapon to possess in such matches.

He can also provide a moment of magic in attack, with his long range shots being particularly impressive. He hasn’t had much of an impact in France so far, but his performances for Charlton last season should place him firmly on Newcastle’s radar.
