Mamadou Sakho
Although primarily linked with Stoke City and Sunderland, Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho could emerge as a target for Southampton if the Saints look as if they are struggling to keep hold of captain Jose Fonte.
Fonte has been near the top of Jose Mourinho’s shopping list all summer, and a deal for the Portugal defender would leave Southampton short of a centre back, with very little time to negotiate the signing of a replacement for any sensible price.
Sakho, then, could be the perfect answer. He may be languid and occasionally clumsy, but the Frenchman is a solid, powerful defender who has been put up for loan by Liverpool in order to win back the trust in Jurgen Klopp. He has European experience with both the Reds and PSG, which should be highly valued, and his unique position of being available on loan means that Southampton could pick up a strong replacement for Fonte, without being forced to overspend in a deadline day frenzy.
