Three possible destinations for departing Chelsea captain John Terry
John Terry will leave Chelsea at the end of the season after over two decades at the club.
The 36-year-old has won all there is to win at Stamford Bridge and will go down as one of the all-time club legends.
To date, he has made 713 appearances since his debut in 1998 and an incredible 578 of those came as captain.
The centre back isn’t interested in retiring though, as the following quotes given to the show:
“I feel I still have plenty to offer but understand that opportunities here will be limited for me.”
There will be a number of options available to him this summer as he searches for a new challenge.
Here are three possible destinations for the Chelsea captain…
West Brom
Tony Pulis has always favoured experienced defenders and he could be interested in bringing John Terry to the Hawthorns this summer.
They have established themselves in the top half of the Premier League this season and Pulis will be given funds to push on this summer.
The centre-back would come in on a free transfer and would carry relatively little risk for the Baggies.
His experience at the highest level and winning mentality would add a lot to the West Brom squad.
For Terry, this could be a move that appeals a lot. It would allow him to stay in the Premier League and prove that he is still good enough to play at the highest level.
He has been given few chances by Antonio Conte this season, but he is more than good enough to be a regular for a team lower down the league table.
The question will be whether he wants to play for a side that won’t be competing for trophies.
Major League Soccer (MLS)
The former England captain has long been with a move to MLS, following the path trod by David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
English players tend to favour a move to the USA rather than China or the Middle East. The main reason being the language and similarity to the UK.
It isn’t a major cultural change and it is a move that could appeal to Terry.
He would have the opportunity to win a trophy on another continent while experiencing a different lifestyle with his family.
In the years gone by, Terry would have been a prominent target for the MLS as their clubs looked to sign players that would increase the league’s profile abroad.
However, that is less of a factor for MLS clubs now. They are now targeting younger foreign players, as they can contribute more on the field.
The league is now getting more competitive and clubs can’t afford to waste a DP spot on a name.
That said, Terry could have something to offer on the pitch, while his leadership skills will appeal to a number of clubs.
A move to the USA or Canada shouldn’t be ruled out.
Newcastle United
This hasn’t been rumoured in the media yet, but there are a lot of reasons why a move to Newcastle United would suit both parties.
If they achieve promotion, as expected, they will have to make several changes to their squad as a number of players have found wanting in the Championship, especially during the run-in. T
he character of the squad has been questioned in recent weeks and Terry would certainly provide that in abundance. Moreover, Rafa Benitez has previously worked with the centre-back at Chelsea, therefore there is an existing relationship between the two.
Although the club don’t want to sign too many players over the age of 30, they will make exceptions occasionally for those that have something to offer.
The Magpies remain a massive club and can attract great players. They are currently undergoing a resurgence under Benitez and it is a project that may appeal to Terry.
The club already have an exciting young centre-back and captain in Jamaal Lascelles. However, there are issues to iron out in his performances and his leadership.
There would be no greater teacher for him than Terry and this is another reason why a move makes sense. This isn’t where the Chelsea captain is likely to end up, but it is certainly a possibility.
