Three players that Tottenham should target during the January transfer window

Tottenham are well placed in the Premier League, currently in 5th position and just one point behind their North London rivals Arsenal.

Although there isn’t a great need to strengthen, it is something that Mauricio Pochettino will want to look at to provide his side with momentum to push on over the second half of the season.

Their summer recruitment was mixed, with Victor Wanyama being a success and becoming a regular in the first team. However, Moussa Sissoko and Vincent Janssen have a lot more to prove in a white shirt to live up to their price tags.

Here are three players that Tottenham should target in the upcoming transfer window…

Max Meyer

The German was a target for Spurs during the summer before they moved for Moussa Sissoko. His contract is due to expire in 2018 and there could be an opportunity to get him for a good price in January.

There will be interest from other clubs as Meyer has been tipped for a big future, but Spurs can steal a march on them if they choose to make a move next month.

The German is a skilful midfielder, capable of playing in a number of positions including centre midfield and on either flank. This versatility will appeal to Spurs. There are doubts regarding his physicality and defensive contribution, but these can be worked on.

Tottenham have struggled to score goals and will be looking to add more creativity to their side over the coming year. They need to have more midfield options as this will increase competition and allow Pochettino to rotate more often. This was certainly a problem in the Champions League as Spurs failed to compete on multiple fronts.

Meyer would provide that and has the ability to influence matches. Although he has struggled for form this season, a move could be what he needs to re-energise himself and he is the type of player who would benefit from playing under a coach like Pochettino. It would be a risk, but one that could pay off for Tottenham, especially if they can get him for a reasonable fee.
