Three players Southampton should target during the January transfer window
Southampton have had a pretty good start to life under new manager Claude Puel. Despite losing several first team players like Victor Wanyama, Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane, who is excelling at Liverpool, the South Coast team will sit in a very comfortable seventh place on Christmas Day.
But with just 17 goals scored in 17 games, it is clear to see where the Saints can improve. Top scorer Charlie Austin is out with a dislocated shoulder, Shane Long has been in poor form and nobody knows yet whether Jay Rodriguez can hit the same levels he was reaching three years ago. A new striker is a necessity.
The team, for all of their attacking misadventure, have been incredibly solid at the back. Naturally, this has led to lots of jealous eyes casting their gaze on Jose Fonte and the exceptional Virgil van Dijk. A new centre back could be necessary to cover any potential loss.
With these areas to focus on, here are three signings Southampton could make in January…
Daniel Sturridge
Jurgen Klopp may have said Daniel Sturridge is not going anywhere this January, but a lack of game time at Anfield could see the striker look for a move.
One of the Premier League’s most talented, but also most injury prone forwards, Sturridge would undoubtedly improve Southampton’s goalscoring output. However, Claude Puel needs a striker that will remain fit in Charlie Austin’s absence and the England man has always struggled to stay fit for long periods of time.
Rumour has it Liverpool might be tempted to sell if they received a bid of around £28 million, which would smash Southampton’s current transfer record of £16 million for Sofiane Boufal. He would guarantee goals at that price, but the gamble would be taken with his fitness. If he were to stay fit, Sturridge could be a world class option for Southampton.
