Three signings Leicester should still make this summer
The transfer window has around a month to go and teams will be looking to complete as much business as they can before the panic that ensues in the final couple of weeks. It is ideal to get your business done before the season starts, as this avoids overreacting to a bad first few matches and buying players for the wrong reasons.
However, with the competition for targets and the stubborn negotiating over prices at board-room level, progression can be delayed until the final week as each party waits for the other to blink first.
Leicester City are coming into the season in the unique position as champions, something that they would never have dreamed of 12 months ago. Although there is the temptation to revel in their success, they must look at the next challenge and try to sustain their position competing with the league’s biggest clubs.
With the Champions League to deal with as well, Leicester need to add both quality and depth to their squad. Over the next couple of pages, here are three players they should try and sign before the window closes.
Yann M’Vila
The Frenchman was excellent at Sunderland last season and has yet to be signed up on a permanent deal by the North East club. Although David Moyes’ appointment may boost M’Vila’s chance of a return to Sunderland, there is an opportunity for another club to come in and gazump the Black Cats.
Rubin Kazan are keen to sell the French international and he could be available for a reasonable fee. M’Vila is a central midfielder, who is strong in the tackle and reads the game well. Meanwhile, he has an excellent passing range and adds creativity from deep, something Leicester perhaps lack in their squad.
The Foxes should move for him as he would add another option in the midfield, something they certainly require, as they lack quality depth in this region. Nampalys Mendy looks to be a great signing and Danny Drinkwater will be an integral part yet again, however, the loss of N’Golo Kanté will be huge and M’Vila would help fill that void.
The Frenchman would also provide the option to play a three man midfield, which may be useful, especially in the Champions League. M’Vila is a good player in possession and has the ability to do well at Europe’s top table. He is beginning to get his act together after threatening to waste his potential, and could be a shrewd signing for Leicester.
