Three most likely destinations for Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe this summer
Kylian Mbappe has had an excellent breakthrough season and he is now regarded as the best young talent in Europe. He already has a Ligue 1 medal and played a big part in Monaco’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.
In the league, the 18-year-old contributed 15 goals and eight assists, which was a goal involvement once every 65.7 minutes.
That is a remarkable record in the final third for a teenager and his potential to improve in the future means that a club may be prepared to pay a significant fee to land him this summer.
Here are three possible destinations for the teenage sensation…
Real Madrid
The report that the La Liga champions lead the race to sign the French teenage striker and that isn’t surprising given that they are arguably the biggest club in the world.
Under Zinedine Zidane, they have been excellent, but they will recognise the importance of refreshing their squad this summer with a couple of big additions.
Cristiano Ronaldo is getting older, while James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale face uncertain futures. Madrid are prepared to pay a world-record fee for Mbappe and have him at the top of their list of summer transfer targets.
Given that he only has a year of senior football under his belt, it would be a huge risk to spend around £100 million on him, but Real Madrid have that money to burn.
They have already shown a willingness to spend big money on a young player in Vinicius Junior and a move for Mbappe would represent lower risk.
The Monaco striker has proven himself at the highest level and carries himself in a confident manner. He would improve the attack at the Bernabeu and could be the long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the short-term, he would benefit from playing alongside the legendary forward.
Manchester City
The Citizens have the funds to complete a deal for the 18-year-old and have already seen what he is capable of at close hand after being knocked out of the Champions League by the Ligue 1 champions. Mbappe scored in both legs of the tie and his movement caused the City defence a lot of problems.
They have signed Bernardo Silva and are reported, by , to be close to signing Benjamin Mendy. If they sign the latter, it would improve their chances of getting the teenager, as the Monaco left-back is one of his closest friends in football.
The advantages of signing Mbappe are obvious, as he has the potential to be one of the best in Europe and is already producing at a high level.
City may not see the move as a priority as they have Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero at the club. Therefore, another striker may not be on their wish list for this summer.
That said, they can’t turn down the opportunity to sign a world-class talent like Mbappe if the opportunity arises. They could opt to sell Aguero to raise funds and launch a world-record bid for the Monaco teenager.
Arsenal
Given that the Gunners don’t have Champions League football to offer, this can be filed under unlikely, but they have a firm interest in the striker and could make another move for him this summer.
The reported in May that they were preparing an £85 million bid for the teenager and although this fee would need to be increased to land him, it shows a willingness to spend big to bring him to North London.
There will be a rebuild at Arsenal this summer and it would send a huge statement of intent if they were to sign Mbappe.
For the striker himself, it would be a risk to join Arsenal as they don’t have the best record of getting the best out of their young players. However, he would be a regular in the first-team and that may not be the case at other top clubs.
The Premier League would offer a new test and he would be stronger for the experience of playing regularly in England.
As a short-term move for a couple of years, before a transfer to one of the biggest clubs in the world, this could be useful for Mbappe. It is unlikely that he will move to the Emirates Stadium, but not impossible.
