Three Liverpool players who need big Euro 2020 performances to impress Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool will be looking toward the future heading into the summer break after a disastrous Premier League title defence. But not every player was given the chance to impress Jurgen Klopp and may need strong performances at Euro 2020.

Klopp is likely to try and trim the excess from his Liverpool ranks in the off-season window. Especially as the Reds are not expected to be blessed with a large transfer budget.

The Athletic’s James Pearce stated on the that Liverpool will not have to sell before they can buy. But the Anfield natives will have to part with some players if Klopp has desires of securing any big-ticket arrivals.

Euro 2020 could be the final chance some get to leave their mark on Klopp, then. With those on the Anfield fringes vying for a regular role and those out on loan waiting for their chance.

Xherdan Shaqiri: Post-Euro 2020 Liverpool future in doubt

Liverpool paid £13million () to buy Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City in 2018, but he now faces an uncertain future. report the Swiss winger has been offered to Fenerbahce as the Reds are willing to sell and the 29-year-old is open to a move to Turkey.

Shaqiri’s Anfield spell may be over after three years having played a mostly spectator role in Klopp’s plans this term. The playmaker only in the Reds’ final 10 Premier League games. He also only started five of his 14 appearances all season.

But a strong performance for Switzerland at this summer’s Euro 2020 could be what saves Shaqiri from Klopp’s Liverpool axe. The international will be expected to play a leading role for his country in the tournament, even if that is not what he has been on offer at Liverpool.

Neco Williams: Liverpool’s breakthrough talent

Neco Williams enjoyed a at Anfield this term and has impressed staff . But a role in Klopp’s plans for next season is in doubt, after triggering a £36m release clause in the contract of RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate ().

With Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez also ahead in the pecking order once they return from their long-term injuries, Williams could struggle to feature regularly next term.

Instead, the 20-year-old may be sent out on loan, but Williams can use his call-up to the Wales squad for Euro 2020 as his chance to cement a place in Klopp’s mind for the new campaign.

Williams has featured regularly for Wales since earning his international debut in 2020 with to his name. Only twice has he failed to feature since being award his first cap and the defender will hope that continues at Euro 2020 to cement his Liverpool role.

Harry Wilson: Now or never at Liverpool

Harry Wilson is nearing his now or never moment at Liverpool. Either he returns to Anfield from a season-long loan spell with Cardiff City or leaves Merseyside for good. He admitted as much to last month, having spent most of his career so far out on loan.

“I feel my senior career has been elsewhere so far,” he said. “150-200 appearances deep now and only a couple have been at Liverpool. The club will always be close to my heart, but if it means moving away to further my career then so be it.”

Wilson 49 times for Derby County, 38 games with Cardiff, 35 for Bournemouth, 14 with Hull City and even seven with Crewe Alexandra, yet has featured just twice for the Liverpool first-team since graduating from the Reds’ academy.

One of those Liverpool appearances came this season when handed his first start in an EFL Cup tie with Arsenal, while the other lasted just 25 minutes away to Plymouth Argyle in a third-round FA Cup replay in January 2017.

Wilson, now 24, needs to have a settled future having impressed on loan with Cardiff. The Wales international scored seven times and offered 12 assists in .

Wilson was also lauded by Neil Harris, with the former Cardiff boss calling him “magic” in conversation with . He will now hope to carry that form into Euro 2020 to potentially earn an Anfield future.
