Three key moments that dictated Chelsea’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United

Ander Herrera’s dismissal – 35 minutes

A careless, miss-timed challenge from Ander Herrera created the game’s main talking point after 35 minutes when the already-booked midfielder brought down Hazard.

On 20 minutes the Spaniard’s first booking came after checking the winger, who was drawing fouls all over the pitch, with his shoulder. Herrera could have no complaints about his initial caution, having made no effort to play the ball when challenging Chelsea’s mercurial man.

When referee Michael Oliver displayed the red card just 15 minutes later, United had reason to feel hard done by. Moments earlier, the ref spoke at length to Phil Jones about repeatedly fouling Hazard, having done so three times. Surprisingly the centre-back turned defensive midfielder escaped without a booking. Instead, Herrera was punished for his side’s persistent over-zealous tackling, receiving his marching orders after a soft foul.

No doubt it is unfair to punish a player for a team’s general fouling, but Herrera must shoulder some responsibility for giving Oliver any reason to show a red card. Having been booked early on and after witnessing the heated discussion with Jones, he needed to show more caution in his approach.
