Rangers’ frustrating start to the season with a draw against Aberdeen thanks to a last minute equaliser could lead to more transfer activity as Steven Gerrard springs into action to plug the gaps in his team.
Having already made additions such as Conor Goldson this summer, he remains on the look out for a number of options in defence and attack and may be prepared to spend to get the men he wants.
These are just three of the men who could be on the move this week:
Jack Simpson – Bournemouth
A young English defender, Simpson was thought to be close to putting pen to paper on a loan move to Ibrox, but report that the move has been delayed following an injury to Nathan Ake which has forced Eddie Howe to reconsider.
The deal is still expected to go through and the 21-year-old will look to add to his limited first team experience, having made just three senior appearances, one in the Premier League and two in the EFL Cup, scoring once.
Borna Barisic – Osijek
Having been eliminated by Rangers in the Europa League, the say that the Scottish side could deal Osijek another blow by looking to complete the signing of left-back Borna Barisic. The Croatian was cut from his country’s World Cup squad at the final hurdle but remained on the standby list.
The report indicates that Barisic has surged to the top of Gerrard’s wish-list on the left of defence as a long-term option in place of John Flanagan, who has taken up the role in recent weeks.
Kyle Lafferty – Hearts
It may be unlikely having had past bids rejected, but another move could be made this week, particularly following on from Craig Levein’s confession that the centre forward has had his head turned by the interest in taking him back to his former club.
“We just get on with things. We had an offer from Rangers, which is not what we are looking for, and we just get on with it. We’ve spoken to Kyle and his head has been turned a little bit.”
Perhaps the least likely of the three potential deals, this one could depend on how desperate Gerrard is to bring Lafferty in. Following Alfredo Morelos’ immature dismissal against Aberdeen, he could be willing to spend a bit more in an attempt to force the deal through.
