Three decisive moments as Chelsea romped to a 3-1 victory over Arsenal
Whilst it may have seemed that much of the second half of the clash between Chelsea and Arsenal was almost one-way traffic, with the home side clearly dominating their London rivals, this crucial match for the title race could easily have gone either way.
In fact, in the opening stages, the Gunners had the better chances until Marcos Alonso took his opportunity to put the Blues ahead just before the quarter of an hour mark. These three moments were the pivotal moments in ensuring that Chelsea earned the three points that gave them a 12 point lead at the top of the Premier League on Saturday night.
Hector Bellerin’s injury in Chelsea’s controversial opening goal
The Gunners started the game excellently and could easily have been ahead in the opening quarter of an hour, yet somehow ended up behind and importantly also lost Hector Bellerin.
As if going a goal behind to Marcos Alonso’s headed wasn’t enough, the loss of Bellerin to a head injury from the Chelsea man’s flying elbow was devastating as they lost a key part of their attacking play with the Spaniard replaced by the much more defensive minded Gabriel.
Whether or not the goal should have been allowed to stand is up for debate, but there was certainly no malice intended by the Chelsea wing-back with both players’ eyes firmly set on the ball as it looped up in the air off the crossbar from a Diego Costa header.
