Three centre-forward alternatives to Antoine Griezmann for Manchester United this summer
As reported by the , Manchester United have cooled their interest in France striker Antoine Griezmann as Zlatan Ibrahimovic has recovered speedily from his cruciate ligament injury and the signs suggest he’ll be in top shape next season. The Swede is set to stay another season, according to his agent , and United have altered their transfer targets accordingly.
The Red Devils want an out-and-out number nine to provide competition to Ibrahimovic, as oppose to a false nine like Antoine Griezmann. Both Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku have been linked by the , however, here are three non-Premier League players that could be heading to Old Trafford this summer.
Andrea Bellotti
Having been linked as a potential replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to , Belotti is a player that could really light up the Premier League, especially in front of goal. Despite his 26 goals, which made him the Serie A’s third top goal scorer, Torino were only able to finish 9th and a move away from the Italian club is looking increasingly likely.
United will have to pay big money for the 23-year-old who is rumoured to have a release clause of more than £70 million, as the Bulls look to keep hold of their star man. Belotti would be ideal in providing competition to Ibrahimovic as he has a physical presence up front and is a real poacher in the box.
He is lethal from crosses and a good finisher, something United are desperate for, having seen their forwards squander chance after chance this season and continually drop points. The Italian number nine could be a real solution to that.
Mauro Icardi
Icardi has stayed loyal to Inter Milan for a number of seasons, however, this summer could be the one that sees the Argentinian move away from the San Siro.
Manchester United have reportedly ruled out for the Inter Milan captain due to his off-the-field antics, according to , but after such a stellar season in the Serie A, the Red Devils could be forced to think again.
United also are an intriguing prospect for Icardi too as they offer the chance to play in the Champions League, while learning from Zlatan Ibrahimovic can only be seen as a good thing.
Icardi is highly different to the aforementioned Belotti, as he is more technically gifted, yet the duo are both out-and-out goalscorers. The Inter Milan captain scored 24 times last season.
His movement up top is almost unparalleled in world football as well. The striker is as comfortable carving out chances for himself as he is for his teammates and eight assists in the league suggest exactly that. United would likely have to pay big money to persuade Inter to let go of their main man and captain but he could be playing at Old Trafford come the end of the transfer window.
Alvaro Morata
The final player on Mourinho’s wish list is Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, who has been superb when he has played for Los Blancos this season. 15 goals in 16 La Liga appearances is superbly prolific considering the Spaniard has had little game time.
Mourinho has managed the striker before and he will know that the former Juventus man has developed into a fine striker. It will be interesting to see if United are able to pry the 24-year-old away from the Spanish super club as Karim Benzema, Madrid’s long-time starting forward, may be handing over the reins to his understudy.
Alvaro Morata may opt for a move to England instead of waiting to claim a starting spot at the La Liga winners and Manchester United are said to be keen in making the Spaniard their man, as reported by the .
