Thomas Frank says one Tottenham player has really blown him away during pre-season
Tottenham Hotspur picked up an impressive win over Arsenal in their pre-season clash in Hong Kong.
The game between the two North London rivals is never friendly, and that was evident from start to finish at the Kai Tak Sports Park on Thursday.
Tackles were flying in from both sides, and even though it wasn’t a game filled with quality, you could see that Arsenal and Tottenham didn’t want to lose.
In the end, it was Thomas Frank’s side who got the win, and the Dane waxed lyrical about one of his players after the game.
Thomas Frank raves about Pape Matar Sarr after Tottenham beat Arsenal
Tottenham signed Pape Matar Sarr from Metz in the summer of 2021.
The midfielder, who was just 18 at the time, was sent back to the Ligue 1 club on loan, and it wasn’t until January 2023 that he made his Spurs debut.
Sarr has had his ups and downs in a Tottenham shirt over the years, but everyone will tell you that he is a very talented player.
In Hong Kong on Thursday, the 22-year-old scored a brilliant goal from a long way out to beat David Raya, who was out of position.
Frank heaped praise on Sarr after the game and admitted that he has been impressed with the midfielder.
He said in his press conference: “An unbelievable goal. Fantastic, well taken. All the credit to Pape.
“He has impressed me, I must admit. He has been really good in the last four weeks.”
Speaking later on , Frank added: “It’s so far the goal of the season! It was great. I know he won Player of the Match and, for me, he was Player of the Match.
“He took it (the goal) so well and so quickly, saw David Raya was too far out of his goal and put it away.
“By the way, I think Pape has been amazing. I really like how he has played and performed in the last four weeks, training and in games. He’s building, and his all-round game today… top.”
Thomas Frank has a serious midfield dilemma at Tottenham
Tottenham’s midfield seemed like a problem a few weeks ago, but things are shaping up for Frank in the middle of his park.
Fabrizio Romano has delivered his ‘here we go’ to tell Spurs fans that Joao Palhinha will be joining their club on loan for the season.
The Portugal international is likely to be a starter, and James Maddison is also expected to get the nod in the more advanced midfield role.
That leaves just one spot up for grabs for Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and also Archie Gray.
It remains to be seen who Frank will pick for that role. Sarr has clearly made an impression, and he could well get a start against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup.
