‘This is a nightmare’: Pundit now thinks Lampard’s tactics are limiting ‘incredible footballer’ at Everton

Everton suffered back-to-back defeats for the second time this season, after losing 2-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s goals decided the result, leaving Lampard’s side just three points above the relegation zone.

The game was a battle of midfields, and Antonio Conte changed the match by bringing on Yves Bissouma in the second half.

Bissouma allowed Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur to play further up the pitch, which ultimately decided the game.

Petrov believed that Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye could have offered more yesterday, but was limited by his role in the side.

Gueye arrived in the summer from Paris Saint-Germain, and has quickly formed an exciting partnership with Amadou Onana.

The pair have been charged with protecting Everton’s back line by Lampard, and has made them a very good defensive outfit this season.

However, Petrov believes Gueye could offer a lot to Everton, if Lampard let him play further up the pitch.

Petrov believes Gueye could offer Everton more

: “I had the pleasure to have a pre-season with Idrissa Gueye, and he’s an incredible footballer.

“He’s about energy, he goes up and down, he goes and puts people under pressure but at the moment he just settles for shifting from side-to-side, you don’t see his energy.

“He literally just running across, because he’s protected, and this is where they have to be adventurous, they need to win it in the opposition’s half.

“With the way they’re set up to just defend deeper, waiting and inviting pressure, that’s not enjoyable.

“I’ve been a midfielder, this is a nightmare for a midfielder, you can only do it for so long.

“Don’t forget, he’s just come from Paris Saint-Germain, they play on the front foot, they’re pressing, they’ll control the ball, it’s really difficult to switch (systems).”

Lampard is a massive fan of Gueye, and spent much of the summer trying to bring him back to Goodison Park.

The former Chelsea boss has previously called Gueye ‘world-class’ and has relied on him heavily since he joined in the summer.

The emergence of Alex Iwobi as a creative central midfield option has led to Gueye playing a more limited deeper role.

However, Petrov believes Lampard could be getting a lot more out of Gueye if he was allowed to play further up the pitch.
