‘Think about yourself’: Saint-Maximin issues worrying update over Newcastle future

Allan Saint-Maximin is hoping Newcastle United can become more ambitious after speaking about his future in an interview with .

Speaking during an appearance with the broadcaster, he sent out a worrying statement over his future, claiming sometimes you have to think of yourself.

Saint-Maximin’s return to full fitness has coincided with an upturn in form for the Geordies, who have won three and lost just two of the last seven in the Premier League with the Frenchman scoring one and registering two assists.

His form since his move to the club in 2019 has sparked rumours of a potential transfer away from the northeast club with AS Roma linked with a move.

When talking about his future at the club and the ambition of the club, Saint-Maximin said: “Newcastle, in my opinion, are not in the right place. We don’t want to fight every year to just be safe. We need to try and fight for the top ten and do everything to win a trophy.”

“I have to be honest, sometimes you have to think about yourself. The most important thing is the team, of course, but you have to think sometimes about your future and that’s why I say I don’t want to fight for one more year to be safe. So I hope we try to do everything to have more ambition and to win a trophy and fight for the first place, it can be great.”

TBR View: Newcastle can ill-afford to lose their talismanic figure

This campaign hasn’t been full of many positives, however, the return to form and fitness of their main attacking threat in Saint-Maximin proves to be the best one.

He proves an incredibly influential figure within the current setup and the worry is that should he leave, who would replace the enigmatic ace?

Saint-Maximin’s performances in recent weeks have been nothing short of sensational with his quality on full show during the victory away to Leicester City two weeks ago. He completed a game-high five dribbles and had two shots on goal as he tore apart the .

And with the club having surrounded him with the quality of Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron, and Joe Willock, there’s a more well-rounded look to Steve Bruce’s men.

But, the 24-year-old’s comments over the outfit’s ambition proved to be incredibly worrying especially when there’s interest in him. They must ensure they don’t lose a talismanic figure, who can make the world of difference for this Newcastle team.
